Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Bloody Berry and Calm Choco each contain 200 mg of alpha-lipoic acid.
Alpha-lipoic acid is a small organic compound your body makes in tiny amounts inside the mitochondria, the structures that turn food into energy. It is both water-soluble and fat-soluble. That dual solubility is unusual and is why it can act as an antioxidant in nearly every tissue.[1] It also recycles other antioxidants. When vitamin C, vitamin E or glutathione have neutralised a free radical and become spent, alpha-lipoic acid helps return them to their active state.[1]
Note on naming. Alpha-lipoic acid is sometimes shortened to ALA. The same abbreviation is used for alpha-linolenic acid, a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. They are completely different compounds. This page is about alpha-lipoic acid, the antioxidant. Forms of alpha-lipoic acid
Alpha-lipoic acid exists as two mirror-image molecules. R-alpha-lipoic acid is the form your body produces and uses. S-alpha-lipoic acid is the synthetic mirror image. Most supplements use a 50/50 racemic mixture of the two. Most clinical trials use the same racemic form. The R form is more biologically active. Pure R-ALA is also less stable and more expensive to produce.[1]
Alpha-lipoic acid is absorbed better on an empty stomach. Food can reduce its bioavailability by around 30%. Plasma levels peak within an hour of an oral dose then fall quickly, which is why daily supplementation is the standard approach.[1]
How much you need
Alpha-lipoic acid is not a vitamin. Your body makes it. There is no recommended daily intake from food agencies. Diet contributes only small amounts, mostly from organ meats and some leafy greens.[1]
Doses used in published clinical research range from 200 mg to 1800 mg per day. Most diabetic neuropathy trials use 600 mg. Studies in women with polycystic ovary syndrome have used 400 to 1200 mg, often split across the day.[2] The 200 mg dose in nōuxx Bloody Berry and Calm Choco sits at the maintenance end of that range, intended as a daily antioxidant input rather than a therapeutic dose for an existing condition.
The science on women's health
Glucose balance and PCOS
The strongest body of research on alpha-lipoic acid in women centres on insulin resistance, often in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled seven randomised trials of ALA supplementation in women with PCOS. Fasting blood sugar fell significantly. Insulin resistance measured by HOMA-IR also improved. Body weight, sex hormones and lipid markers did not change in the pooled analysis.[2] A broader 2022 review of nutritional supplements in PCOS reached a similar conclusion. Alpha-lipoic acid shows benefit on the metabolic side of the syndrome but not on the reproductive hormone side.[3]
The biology fits. Alpha-lipoic acid is part of the enzyme complex that feeds glucose into the mitochondria. Supplementing it appears to improve how cells respond to insulin.[1]
Oxidative stress and nerve symptoms
The longest-running clinical use of alpha-lipoic acid is for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. A 2023 systematic review of ten randomised trials found that oral ALA reduced symptom scores in people with diabetic sensorimotor neuropathy. The effect was dose-related. 600 mg per day was the most studied dose.[4] A 2026 systematic review of fifteen trials confirmed the symptom benefit, particularly for paresthesia, numbness and burning sensations. Effects on long-term glucose control and nerve conduction were less consistent.[5]
The mechanism is antioxidant. High glucose drives oxidative stress in nerve tissue. ALA quenches the resulting free radicals and supports the regeneration of glutathione, the body's main internal antioxidant.[1]
EU authorised health claims
Under EU law, no specific health claim is currently authorised for alpha-lipoic acid. The European Food Safety Authority has not approved a claim at this dose because the available evidence has not yet met the EU bar for cause-and-effect in healthy adults.
Research suggests alpha-lipoic acid may improve metabolic markers in women with PCOS and reduce symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.[2][4] The 200 mg dose in nōuxx Bloody Berry and Calm Choco sits below the doses used in those clinical trials. Until larger trials in healthy women confirm an effect at typical supplemental doses, we do not make formal health claims for alpha-lipoic acid.
